What a Custom WooCommerce Store Costs and What to Budget After
A transparent look at the build price, monthly costs and hidden fees of a custom WooCommerce store in South Africa, and how a custom build avoids plugin licences.
WooCommerce powers a large share of online stores worldwide, and it is a popular choice in South Africa because it is flexible, you own the store, and there is no platform lock-in. But the price on a quote rarely tells the whole story. This guide breaks down what a custom WooCommerce store costs to build, what it costs to run, and where the surprises usually hide.
For broader context, read our guides on what an ecommerce website costs in South Africa and Shopify vs WooCommerce vs a custom store.
Our price
Our Online Store plan is listed at R20,000 (incl. VAT), and is currently on sale for R12,000. It is a custom-built WooCommerce store for up to 50 products, and it includes:
- A custom theme and custom plugins, built by us, with no premium licence fees.
- A South African payment gateway connected and tested.
- Shipping rates and VAT configured.
- Order emails and basic stock management.
- Training, and 30 days of support after launch.
The plan is a "from" price. Larger catalogues, special pricing rules, or integrations are quoted on top after a scoping call.
The hidden cost of "free" WooCommerce
WooCommerce itself is free software. A store is not free. A typical template-based WooCommerce store ends up costing money in several places:
- A premium theme, usually bought as an annual licence.
- Paid plugins for features that are not built in, such as shipping rates, subscriptions, product bundles or advanced filters.
- Annual renewals on each of those, which add up.
- Plugin conflicts, where two add-ons fight each other and break checkout.
- Bloat, where a dozen plugins slow the store down.
None of this is a reason to avoid templates. For a small store, a good theme and a few well-chosen plugins is a sensible route. But the "cheap" quote often leaves out the licence costs you will pay every year.
Why we build the theme and plugins ourselves
Because we custom-build the theme and the plugins your store needs, you avoid most of those costs.
- No licence fees. You are not renting your own store features from third parties.
- Fewer plugins. Each plugin is a security and speed risk. A custom plugin does one job properly.
- Fits your business. If you need a quirky delivery rule, wholesale pricing or a custom quote button, we build exactly that.
- You own it. The code is yours, which matters if you ever change developers. See how to choose a web developer in South Africa.
The trade-off is honest: a custom build costs more up front than installing a template. Over a few years it often costs less, and it works better.
Running costs to budget for
Whatever platform you choose, a store has recurring costs. Budget for these:
| Cost | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting, domain and care plan | From R350 per month with us | Online stores usually sit at the higher end, because they carry more risk |
| Payment gateway fees | Set by your provider | Charged per transaction. Compare providers before you pick |
| Courier and shipping | Per order | Pass on to customers or build into prices |
| Email marketing | Varies by list size | Optional but valuable |
| Product photography | Once-off or per product | Often the most underrated cost |
On hosting and maintenance, note that sources we reviewed put basic care plans around R199–R500 per month for simple sites and R3,800–R8,000 or more per month for busy e-commerce stores that need constant attention. Where your store lands depends on traffic, number of orders and how much support you want. We talk through the right level during scoping.
The payment gateway
Every online sale passes through a payment gateway such as PayFast, Yoco or Stripe-style providers. We connect and test the one you choose, but the gateway charges you a fee on each transaction. That fee is not part of our price and not something we control. Read South African payment gateways for online stores before you decide, and factor the fees into your product pricing. Our guide on ecommerce pricing, margins and VAT shows how.
What the 50-product limit means
The plan covers a store of up to 50 products. For most small retailers, makers and local suppliers, that is a complete catalogue. If you have hundreds of products, you need bulk import tools, better filtering and stronger inventory management. Those are scoped as extras. See inventory management for small online stores.
What takes the most time
Surprisingly, the technical build is rarely the bottleneck. These are:
- Product content. Each product needs a good title, description and photos. Our guides on writing product pages that sell and product photography on a budget help.
- Legal pages. Returns, privacy and terms. See online store legal requirements in South Africa.
- Shipping rules. Deciding what to charge, and where you deliver. See online store shipping in South Africa.
Have these ready and your launch will move quickly.
Security and backups
An online store handles customer data and orders, so it needs more protection than a brochure site. Updates, backups and monitoring are not optional. Our guide on online store security and backups explains what to expect, and this is a core part of the care plan.
Is WooCommerce right for you?
WooCommerce suits businesses that want control, flexibility and ownership, and that sell physical or digital products in South Africa. If you want a fully hosted tool with minimal technical involvement, a hosted platform may fit better. If you have complex requirements, a larger custom build is the answer. We are happy to tell you which is right, even if it is not us.
